Why Synthetic CBD is the Next Big Thing

Why Synthetic CBD is the Next Big Thing

Synthetic cannabinoids are growing famous day by day. Very soon, they will be on the highest demand in the medical research field to test their therapeutic uses. Pharmaceutical companies are now taking advantage of cannabis compounds produced in the laboratory. This is because they are more reliable than the extracted ones.

Zynerba Pharmaceuticals recently made an announcement about having completed its phase 2 clinical tests on its drug Zygel. This drug is meant to treat symptoms of 22q, autism spectrum disorder, Fragile X Syndrome, and many other disorders.

Zygel is a product of 8, 9-dihydrocannabidiol (H2CBD), which is a synthetic CBD present in hemp and marijuana plants. There are high chances of it being approved as the first drug made from synthetic CBD.

H2CBD is also perfect for treating seizure disorders in rats. Other clinical trials will be conducted soon to establish an effective drug for epilepsy. Currently, Epidiolex is the only available drug for epilepsy. These trials are set to be conducted by the University of California scientists.

Epidiolex was approved by FDA in 2018. It is an effective drug for treating seizures in some epileptic patients. This drug is also a CBD product which was granted a fast-track status and later approved. The CBD present in it is extracted from industrial hemp.

Cannabinoids have always been informally used to treat several health conditions. These include anxiety, pain, insomnia, and seizures.

Most cannabinoids are manufactured in the laboratory using two methods. The first method is culturing in an organic base. An example of this is yeast fermentation. Another method is using petroleum-based products to simulate the structure of cannabis chemicals.

“Take an instance of aspirin. It was discovered in the bark of a willow tree. However, nowadays, there are no willow trees from which we can extract aspirin. This is because it was chemically synthesized a long time ago,” said David Elsley, the CEO of Cardiol Therapeutics Inc. to a financial post.

“We can’t avoid the fact that synthetic cannabinoids are soon becoming a large part of the cannabis industry,” Elsley further said.”Basing on history, each medicine should be made pharmaceutically at affordable costs for the general public to access it easily.”

Awesome Benefits of Synthetic Cannabinoids

Drug manufacturers have the option of extracting cannabinoids from the hemp plant. However, they highly prefer to use synthetic CBD. Note that synthetic CBD is not meant to replace the natural ones.

Natural cannabinoids are generally less expensive to extract from hemp plant compared to manufacturing in the lab. Also, other cannabinoids like CBG and THCV only exist in cannabis plants in very small quantities. As a result, extracting them is a bit expensive compared to other cannabinoids like CBD and THC. This is why creating them in the lab is a good idea.

Minor cannabinoids are becoming popular as research goes on, and legalization happens. This means their demand is also growing every day. A stable source of these cannabinoids is needed for research and creating in the lab will be the most reliable one.

“The plant has more than 100 cannabinoids. Although CBD and THC can easily be extracted, they are very rare, and you can’t find them right now. The cost of creating the cannabinoids in the lab is the same regardless of what you are creating,” said David Kideckel, equity research analyst, to a financial post.

Purity and consistence are other advantages of cannabinoids created in the lab (synthetic). This is according to some CBD producers. Synthetic CBD doesn’t get affected by heavy metals present in the dirt where plants grow, pesticide residue, and solvents used for extraction. Also, weather and climatic changes cannot affect synthetic CBD. This ensures that only pure CBD is manufactured for perfect research results.

A perfect example is yeast fermentation in the lab. It is completely susceptible to drought, heat waves, and harsh climatic conditions. There is a consistence in cannabinoids manufactured in the lab. This is unlike those extracted from different plants that have grown under different climatic conditions.

Lastly, synthetic CBD is available for more innovations in pharmaceuticals. In the cannabis plant, CBD has existed for so many years and cannot be patented. However, during CBD creation in the lab, it can be combined with other products to invent something else. The new product can be patented.

“In the medical field, patenting CBD is a perfect way of making a profit. However, now that it’s already in the public domain, the only way to patent it is to combine it with other new products that have medicinal value,” wrote Alex Somjen, a cannabis investor, in Green Entrepreneur.
