When it comes to ranking the best vape manufacturers, SMOK is one of the few names that will come very close to the top. The Chinese company has, in recent times, forged mods that have blown vapers away. I can say this emphatically having been privileged to use and equally review some of their previous designs.

So what’s new?

The company recently added a new ‘baby’ to their collection of impressive designs called the Smok T-Priv. It comes in two distinct forms, as a single mod and as a kit that comes with the TFV8 tank.

The T-Priv is not so different from some of its predecessors like the H-Priv. It retains a very similar intimidating appearance and fortified with a futuristic finishing. The mod is covered by an outer shell that is basically a hollowed-out chassis that is drilled with strong attention to details. The LED panels, on the other hand, sits comfortably under this layer.

The LED panels are customizable, and they illuminate the device when you fire it up. Cool, right?

Aside from these features, its wattage range is up to 220 W. It is powered by dual batteries (18650), TC mode for Ni, titanium and stainless, and upgradeable firmware.

As a single mod, it could cost as much as $72, but as a starter kit, you could be lucky enough to get it for as low as $57.

Having said all that, it’s safe to assume that you are itching to know what the it can do and what it’s made of. So, I will just get right to it!

Build Quality

The Smok T-Priv is a beast! It makes an incredible first impression and works really well. I love the firing button in particular. It is soft and feels a lot like what you’d find in the GX2/4 mod.

Like I said earlier, it shares some similarities with previous models. For example, the OLED lies at the top of the mod, which is exactly the same place you’d find it in the H-Priv and G320 models. The only difference is that in the this mod, the OLED screen takes up almost half of the top space. Aside from the fact that the screen is not very bright, every other thing adds up.

The screen is raised a little higher by a bevel which allows you to fit a tank or an atomizer up to 25mm without conflicting with the raised edge. The gold-plated 510 pins are spring mounted, and I am yet to encounter any problem when connecting atomizers.

However, nothing thrills me more than T-Priv’s well-drilled outer shell. I still cannot decide whether it looks like the 80s customed-styled graffiti or the Deception on a revenge mission. The appearance is aggressive, and it comes with dynamic edges and hard angles.

Currently, there are seven colors to choose from if you do decide to settle for the device. The paint-job is characterized by a metallic sheen. The red sample of the mod that we put through its paces, looked absolutely spectacular. The pre-sale colors offer other options, but not all of them are impressive. The rainbow, for example, is not so attractive. In the end, it all depends on your preference and interest. However, I think the auto detailing inspired the pre-sale color choices made by SMOK.

Below this beautiful piece of art is a fine layer of white plastic which are illuminated by nicely fitted LEDs. To see these come to life, all you need to do is to fire the device. It is really a spectacle to behold. The settings menu allows you to play around with the lights a little. You can change the colors that appear, manipulate transitions, and set glowing patterns.

When it comes to inputting or removing batteries, its battery cover makes things easy. The contacts are plated with gold to increase conductivity and the device’s overall performance. The terminals are clearly marked out. It’s easy to see the positive and negative segments marked out on the battery cover so you’d know exactly where to put the batteries.

It’s not clearly spelled out, but the USB port is meant for updates and also for charging the T-Priv. With a 1 amp capacity, the mod offers flexibility to vapers who like to hit the road a lot. Regardless of this obvious advantage, you’d still better off using an external charger.

Device Functionality

If you are one of the several fans of SMOK products out there, then some of the functionalities I am about to list out will not be new to you. SMOK likes to maintain a culture of offering consistent quality when it comes to their products. You can rest assured that all of the functionality listed will fit right into your desired specifications for a perfect starter kit.

– Five clicks to the fire button will turn the device on. Once it is fired on, five clicks will lock the device.

– Wattage gives you the chance to choose between different strength levels, hard, soft, and normal.

– The mod can switch between TC and VW modes.

– On the other hand, three clicks to the fire button will take you straight to the menu. On the menu list, you can play around with options like color, puff, settings, submenus, and mode.

– Under temperature, the first thing to do is to dial in your desired wattage. Then choose a wire type (Ni, SS, and Ti) and manually change the temperature co-efficient resistance of each of the metal. If you are unsure of what to do, then I will advise that you stick to the default settings.

– Puff: note how many times you have inhaled, then modify puff settings, limiter and reset button

– Color: you can manipulate the LED colors whichever way you want. You can keep them on always or choose when they come on.

– Settings: Here, you can activate the stealth mode, choose screen timeout, change screen orientation, modify ohm resistance, and carry out firmware updates.

– Power: Switch the mod off

– Another way to turn the T-Priv off is by long-pressing the fire button for up to 5 seconds

– You can alo hold down the fire button and down at the same time to switch between TC and VW mode

– If you want to change draw strength, you can do so in the VW mode by holding down fire and up. You can change wattage in TC mode by following the same process.

The T-Priv’s screen is small, but SMOK made sure that everything it displays is easy to see.

Wattage can be tweaked directly from 6 to 100 watts and a single watt increment afterward. While in TC mode, you can move between Celsius (moves in 5-degree steps) and Fahrenheit (10-degree steps). Just cycle up from the top or bottom of any of the range and the temperature type will change.

Smok T-Priv Set-Up

To come up with this review, I had to try different tanks and atomizers on the mod. In fact, I used the 70/30 VG/PG to vape (65-80watts).

How the Smok T-Priv Rocked

For the wattage range I used, the ramp-up time was short and accurate. However, the mod does not feel comfortable when handled. The well-drilled body needs an imposing tank for it to be whole and give the comfortable feeling you want when you hold it. Though it is expected that the TFV8 should fit well with the mod, I personally think the TFV12 works better.

If you prefer clicker buttons like me, you may not like the T-Priv’s firing button very much. Aside from that, the button is easy to reach and is very responsive.

It’s sad that the LED lights are not really visible during the day. Even in a darker environment, it’s hard to see the lights because your hand will most likely cover them.

On a positive note, the T-Priv does what it is meant to do. So there really isn’t much to complain about aside the battery life that doesn’t last very long when you decide to get lit with the mod.

Form and Aesthetics

The design and performances of the Smok T-Priv will draw mix opinions, but one thing is sure, this mod follows after all of SMOK’s standards.

This device is not for the simple-minded. You also need to have a big hand because it is big and chunky. The screen looks great at the top, but it takes up space that could have accommodated bigger atomizers.

Though I have not used it for long from what I can see on the outer shell, it will be a bit difficult to clean. Regardless of these drawbacks, the mod is the new kid in the block, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Pros and Cons

  • A nice and responsive ignition bar
  • It has very impressive LED lights
  • The outer shell is well crafted
  • It comes along with a TFV8 tank
  • Comes with an easy to navigate menu and other sleek functionalities

  • The OLED screen will get spills on it easily
  • The multifunctional LED lights will drain battery life
  • Outer crevices will make the body very hard to clean
  • It cannot accommodate bigger atomizers or tanks

To be honest, I wouldn’t say the Smok T-Priv is the best thing after ‘chips and ketchup’ (Yeah, that’s my favorite). It seems that SMOK just upgraded aesthetics and maintained the functionality that we have all gotten accustomed to. So there is nothing new here apart from a really cool lighting system.

However, it does all of the basics well, so it’s a win-win situation if you are looking for a mod with nice designs.
