Powerful, feature-packed devices usually come with a trade-off in heftiness and large dimensions. Smok shook the vaping industry with its Q-Box kit release, an example of what smart engineering can achieve even when there’s a size limitation.

Highly portable and extremely compact, the Q-Box manages to implement most of the features of its larger predecessors. Both advanced and pocketable, it all seems too good to be true. Let’s see if Smok manages to deliver on their ambitious promises.

Q-Box Exterior

The 0.96” OLED screen covers almost the whole front of the device. It’s box-shaped and fairly thick, but this shouldn’t present a problem even when you’re keeping it in your pocket. It manages to remain reasonably light even with the tank attached to it.

The chassis of the Q-Box is built entirely out of a durable zinc alloy. One of the downsides is the placement and the material used for the three buttons. They are located at the right side of the device, with the up/down buttons being placed next to one another and the firing button above them. All of them are made out of plastic, and they slightly protrude out of the device. This could cause accidental misfires. Additionally, the firing button is pretty loose, unresponsive, and placed at a slight angle.

510 threaded connection is on the top of the device, and it’s made out of stainless steel. The included tank sits perfectly flush, and so should all the tanks up to 22mm in diameter. On the bottom is the micro USB port.

TFV8 Baby Beast Tank

The TFV8 Baby Beast is 22mm in diameter and an absolute powerhouse when it comes to performance. It has 3ml of capacity, which is mediocre, but with a top refilling mechanism to speed up the process. It’s made out of stainless steel and Pyrex glass, and it has two airflow cutouts at the bottom.

Alongside the included M2 0.25ohm dual-core coils, the Baby Beast supports a plethora of other sub-ohm coils, including the Q2 dual coil, the X4 quad coil, and T8 octuple coil. Keep in mind though that if you choose to buy any of these, you’ll be limited to a maximum of 50W strength with the Q-Box.

Depending on how frequent you vape, the included coils will last anywhere from 4 days to a couple of weeks. A coil replacement is a pretty simple process done through the bottom of the tank. Unfortunately, the tank will have to be empty if you don’t want to spill the liquid everywhere.

The main menu is accessed by pressing the firing button three times in succession. The first option is a mode choice – wattage or temperature control (TC). In TC mode, the user can specify what kind of heating element the device is using – nickel, titanium, stainless steel – and modify the temperature accordingly.

Another awesome feature is the puff counter. You can set the maximum amount of puffs for the day, after which the device won’t fire anymore. The display shows the remaining number of puffs, as well as providing you with an option to reset it. Finally, there is some additional information shown on the screen, such as the remaining battery life, internal temperature, voltage, etc.

The Smok Q-Box has a temperature control mode, but it seems like modifying the wattage results in a better outcome. At 50W, you’ll get an impressive performance out of it, but this is going to be fairly short-lasting. It manages to deliver on the vapor production, giving you the ability to create huge clouds with the 12 second cut-off time. Flavors are rich and prominent as well, make sure to use the 50W setting sparingly since you’ll run out of battery quickly.

Around 30-35W is where you’ll get the best battery-to-performance ratio. This will squeeze out an extra hour or two, while still providing satisfying flavor quality and vapor production. For maximum efficiency, it would be best to use coils meant for lower wattage vaping.

Battery Life

With a device this small, it’s not unusual for the battery life to be the biggest downside, and Smok Q-Box is no exception. The 1600mAh is pretty short-lasting, especially if you’re vaping at the maximum strength, which isn’t all that high with this device. Don’t expect to get more than 3.5-4 hours at 50W, or around 6 hours in the 30-35W range.

Unfortunately, the battery can’t be swapped, so you’ll need to have a charger on you at all times. The included coils don’t help either since they’re meant to be used at near-max wattages. It would’ve been a lot better if Smok included the Q2 dual-cores, which are ideal in the 30-40W range.

The micro USB port placement is also pretty inconvenient. Since it’s on the bottom, the device will have to be placed on its side. Although the Baby Beast isn’t prone to leaking, other tanks could have this problem, especially when full.

Pros and Cons

  • Small size and a large amount of features
  • Easy to set-up and use
  • Metal construction
  • Very high-quality tank included
  • Support for many coils
  • A lot of information on the screen
  • Both TC and wattage modes
  • Good performance

  • Very small battery capacity
  • Plastic, low-quality buttons
  • Included coils will eat through battery life at 50W
  • Poor charging port placement

There aren’t many devices out there that have the same capabilities as the Smok Q-Box. It makes one wonder how they managed to fit everything into such a small shell. Of course, it does have its limitations, but that’s to be expected when your vaping device is smaller than a deck of cards. Still, if you can get over them, this is an excellent unit that won’t let you down.
